Group: Audience Research - Final Screening

  • We used a questionnaire for our audience to fill out straight after we shown them our final piece. Our school arranged for everyone to show their work to peers at the school and other local schools.
  • We used a mixture of both closed questions which gave us reliable and valid data. We thought that by doing a questionnaire it would be easy to fill out and make our results more reliable, although some people were unable to understand the instructions and answered some questions incorrectly.
  • Our results were mostly positive feedback which was encouraging at this stage, and it seems we have done what was required since the first screening. We got the desired reaction of the audience.

Group: Update

Today is the first deadline to have a finished clip before we recieve our feedback and add the finishing touches. We are not completely happy with parts of what has been achieved so far, for some parts however we are pleased, but believe with extra time we have good enough material to have a good opening.

In todays lesson we need to add the titles, and a finishing soundtrack, our film opening today will not be the very best we can do, so hopfully with some positive feedback we will be able to achieve what we want to do.

Things we have done since last time

We used after effects for a blackening effect on the eyes of our killer, it worked really well and we are happy with the outcome. This was done by masking the eyes and tracking the movement of the eyes giving the effect of the eyes having disappeared.

Group: Update

  • Over the weekend we re-filmed a large amount of our opening sequence as we had been having problems with our sound and wanted to improve on our storyline.
  • We had to re-film all the shots featuring dialogue as the sound had not picked up as well as we hoped. This time we used a dictaphone simultaneously when filming to get a better quality of sound in dialogue.
  • We have also filmed the final part of the opening using a collage of pictures we took and blood we made on Friday as well parts of maps and chalk drawings of symbols and images to cover a blackboard that we filmed to show that the murder in the film is part of a serial killing

Group: Blood Photographs/Deaths/Fake blood

Making fake blood for photos.

  • We made the fake blood using Cornflour, coffee, sugar and food colouring as we had seen in a video on YouTube.
  • We made the blood for the photoshoot of characters who have already been killed as part of the backstory. These photos will appear in shots in the background and also the shot of the main character to reveal that he has died.

Photos

  • We set up scenes of death on Liam's kitchen floor of friends and ourselves pretending to have died. We drew the symbol on the skin of all the dead people using black eyeliner.

  • We dripped the fake blood over the faces of the dead people and then splattered it over the floor to try and create realistic blood splatter patterns.

  • We edited the photographs using Photoshop Elements to remove the yellowness of the images.

  • We then increased the contrast and decreased the saturation to make dark and more mysterious images.

We are pleased with the outcome of the images on their own but we are still concerned about how they will appear on film.

Problems with Filming

  • We have been trying to film some more shots for our opening recently as we feel that the sequence is lacking some shots and continuity.
  • We planned to film at the weekend however the weather was drastically different with heavy snowfall affecting our location. We tried a couple of shots trying to avoid revealing the snow however it was very difficult to keep continuity and the shots did not work so we were unable to use the footage.
  • We still need to film this footage however there is still problems with weather and continuity. We have set a couple of dates to film and we are hoping that at least one of these dates will be unaffected by the weather and the snow will have cleared. We also think we will be able to film some shots inside to add to our sequence

Group: Mise-en-scene

 Couple:

To make the characters look more like a couple we suggested that they wore similar clothing so they both wore christmas jumpers. We thought that having similar clothing would have connotations of being close with each other

Scary girl: We wanted the girl inside the building to appear dark and dangerous so she wore black and dark clothing connoting the girl as being evil.

The Close-ups we want to show a supernatural quality by blackening out her eyes with After Effects and use of makeup.

Props:

Polaroid Camera - We are using the camera to be seen and to make the printing of images instant to keep the pace of the sequence quicker. We also are using the diagetic sound of the camera to make it clear the action is happening.

Photos - We are using photos of other people being dead to hint at the plotline if the film was to continue and show that there have been previous deaths in the plot

Pinboard/Blackboard - to display the pictures in close ups

Fake Blood - we are making blood from a recipe we found on YouTube using coffee, cornstarch, sugar and food colouring

Group: Filming.

Today we started to film for our actual piece, we are really happy with what we accomplished today however there is still some parts to film, these include the montage parts which will be filmed at a different place.

The video shows a sped up version of us filming today. All shots filmed outside the location worked well and we are happy with the outcome. - The lighting worked extremely well and we managed to get a variety of shots in.

One problem again was footage from the inside of the shelter, however we tried to combat the problem by using artifiicial light to make it brighter, which was succesful.

Here is a video of the set-up and filming at the location.

Group: Location Reccie/Starting To Film.

Location Reccie.

At the start of the half-term we had to find a new location. We looked in Tonbridge mostly and parts of Tunbridge Wells for a location suitable for filming our opening sequence. We found several different possible locations, each with advantages and disadvantages. From this initially we found where we wanted to film and arranged a date to start filming. We did some test shots and we found some problems with the location. However, we experimented with the lighting and acting.

  • The location chosen works quite well, however we may need to find a new location.
  • We were not happy with the filming inside, and we believe that it would be hard to get the lighting right.
  • The actors chosen did not fit what we were looking for, and we may need a new cast.
  • Camera angles and shots worked reasonably well, but we need to include more of our A - grade shots.

Group: Title Ideas

  • These are the title ideas for our opening sequence.
  • These fonts fit the generic horror film conventions.
  • We are going to use the top font style as we think that this is the most appropriate for our film.

Group: Original Pitch & Idea Changes.

Feedback/Changes:

  • Making it more modern, mise-en-scene, props, original ideas. - Crossing pictures of the wall, Young Girl can use new technology to get pictures, makes it more modern. Looking through camera of dead pictures of people.
  • A Grade shots and techniques will make our opening sequence be original and stand out.
  • Confirmed Location and confirmed Actors.
  • Mise-en-scene- historic clothing changed to modern day clothing, but still dirty and bland.
  • Soundtrack - Decided we are making are own soundtrack.
  • Titles - Try to use after effects, create an effect where text it interacts with the clips.

Group: Update

We have done some practice shots in two locations to test out different styles, types of shot, cameras and lighting.
We may use some of these practice shots for our final opening film.
We have a preliminary storyboard and story idea but we may make some adjustments after trying out some of the ideas on our location reccie.
From these practices, we have made decisions about some key shots we would like to use.
We found that using a second camera for point of view shots and handheld shots worked well and we would like to incorporate this into our film.
We found that high angle and birds-eye view shots worked well for establishing shots of locations
We would like to include close-ups and extreme close-ups
We may use tilts and panning shots to show/follow characters.

(Unable to embed video)

  • This is video of all our final storyboard shots. Some of these shots may be subject to change depending on time, equipment and people involved.

  • We have realised that after putting together are animatic with the shots at the times we wanted, that we do not meet the 2 minute criteria and therefore will be using filler shots or different establishing shots to make it longer.

  • This was useful to us as we arew now aware of what needs to be done to achieve a high level for our final piece.

Group: Wildnerness Woods

Final Wilderness Woods.

  • We are really happy with the outcome of are film made on the trip.
  • We used alot of shots that we are planning to use, are A-grade shots consist of the "bag shot" and the pan inside the little bilding.
  • The sondtrack worked well and was suitable for the clip used, however the soundtrack was a song from YouTube and not our own.
  • One issue was the focusing on the camera, as in some shots the clips came out grainy, this was because we were manual focusing.
  • Another issue was the continuity editing and in places we did not have enough shots to keep the clip running.

CC: Storyboard Shots

  • The first shot will be a mid-shot of an abandoned, derelict house, using low-key lighting.
  • The second shot is of the boyfriend and girlfriend walking into the abandoned house, intrieged.
  • The third shot is a mid-shot from behind of the young girl crossing off a picture on the wall of a person with blood.
  • The boy walks upstairs and after a short period of time the girl follows, to find the boy dead on the floor and the young girl in shock from the point of view of the young girl.

Group: Soundtrack

Soundtrack Ideas

We have listened to a variety of soundtracks for inspiration for the soundtrack for our opening sequence.

Sucker Punch - We really liked the music in the opening sequence of Sucker Punch and the fact that it was a cover of a well-known song, re-recorded to fit with the style of the film. We are considering recording our own soundtrack for the opening sequence.

28 Days Later - We really like the style of the music from this film and it is very conventional of the style we want to crete. However the song is very well-known and has been used a lot in films.

The Shining - We liked the simplicity of the soundtrack used in The Shining and the way the music builds up which could be used to emphasize particularly dramatic parts of the film. This soundtrack is also well known so if we were to use a well known piece such as this we may record our own cover of the song.

JP: Storyboard Shots

These story board pictures are from openings and trailers of films in the horror genre that I like and could possibly incorporate some of the ideas into our own opening sequence

  • The first picture is from the Sinister trailer
  • It is a close up of a mans face and uses the reflection in his glasses to show what he is looking at.
  • The completely dark background makes his face the only focus of the shot and it stands out against the dark background with the orange colour of his face connoting fire.

  • The second storyboard drawing is from the opening of Zombieland
  • It is a long overhead shot using the rule of thirds to focus the eye on the body
  • Text overlays the image while also seeming to be part of the image

  • The third picture is from the opening of The Woman in Black
  • It features a long shot of three girls standing in open windows
  • The girls are framed by the window frame making them stand out in the image.
  • The mostly dark image contrasts with the bright light from the windows

  • The fourth picture is from the opening of Se7en
  • It is an extreme close up of someones fingers holding a blade
  • The extreme close up reveals a lot of detail within an image that would not have been seen in a longer shot

Group: Movie Synopsis

Whole Film

Opening:

Clip starts with montage titles - Pictures being scratched put on a wall, interacts with titles.

Cuts. With a boy and girl (teenagers) who find an abandoned house, In the house he hears a young girl calling for help so the boy enters on his own, girl stays outside. She is in a empty room with pictures of 100s of people on the wall some with crosses on. The boy goes over to help the girl and it cuts after she looks up at boy.

Young girl is filmed walking away from the house with a picture of the couple which now has a cross on the boy, knowing that the girl is the next target.

After Opening:

The murder is reported and at the scene a picture of the boy is on the wall with a cross on it. There is also footage found on a small camera of both the boy and the girl (teenager), from all times of the day. The footage is not released to anybody.

As the film progesses more characters are found dead, and more footgae is revealed, the police use the picture evidence to work out the next targets and try and stop the murders.

Police work out a pattern of the way people have been killed, and realise the symbol for murder is the way people are dying, therefore they know who the last person is (Girl from the start) , and try to stop the murder by protecting her.

The film ends on a cliffhanger, and the audience are unaware if the girl has survived or not.

  • Music - (Suckerpunch) well known song rerecorded in different/darker style?

  • Camera Shots - Long shots, Contrast between positive and negative scenes eg. Happy outside in sunlight and dark inside building.
  • Titles - Part of the scene rather than over the images, interacting with images.

Storyboard Ideas.

LB: Storyboard Shots

Storyboard Shots.

  • The first shot is from the Let Me In trailer, It is a long shot using a rule of thirds with the smoke in the centre of the background.
  • The scene is very dark and is very film noire like, the use of shadows and darkness ads to the tension of the scene.
  • The clip features the convention "Help Me" scene in a horror film.

  • The second storyboard is from Texas Chainsaw Massacre,  Its is positioned behind a stair post, as if we are looking through, a point of view long shot.
  • Similar to other horrors, it is very dark and the use of silhouettes sets the mood of the scene.

  • In the clip from Sinister it shows the juxtaposition of light and dark between the two shots.
  • The first clip is a vintage, bright  high saturated scene of a family having fun, the next dark, scary scene of the same family being hung.
  • The use of rule of thirds, positions the characters in the scene. The family have changed sides, the clip is filmed with a handi-cam to make It look like a private video tape.

Group: Thriller or Horror Decision

As a group we have decided to aim for a horror themed opening with some aspects and conventions of thrillers. We have looked at many current horror and thriller films and revised the different shots used in the conventions of these films. These include:

  • Dark lighting to set the scene
  • Music to set the tense atmosphere
  • Bright lighting to juxtapose the Darker scenes
  • Use of rule of 3rds
  • Positioning characters
  • Appropriate locations e.g remote and isolated places
  • Appropriate diegetic and non-diegetic sound

Group: Audience Research

Click on this to take you to our Survey

  • Are Audience research was very helpful as we have realised what we want to achieve is a popular choice.
  • The target audience are majority teenagers, but are information is still helpful.
  • Characters and locations chosen were the most popular choice.
  • Overall this was very helpful as we are now able to to go on with our film with the confidence that what we want to do is what wants to be seen by others.
  • The questions we asked were all closed multiple choice questions, as we wanted it be quick and easy to answer to get a more reliable response.
  • We ended up with a good bunch of resultsfrom a range of 40+ people anserwing, we didnt get any answers that were deliberatley stupid or un helpful.
  • Now that we have got this information we can start thinking about putting together a full idea and storyboard before filming.

The Introduction of this film is very well done, the soundtrack, camerawork and mise-en-scene, all create a suspense filling  introduction. Right from the start it drags you in and wants you to watch the rest of the film.

This film genre is not the same as the one we are choosing to do, however we are still able to learn from this film as there are many different camera techniques we want to achieve e.g. characters behind objects in the foreground

JP: Generic Conventions

Thriller

The Departed (Scorsese, 2006)

  • The narrative is centred around crime as is conventional of thrillers
  • Quick cutting rate connotes action and a fast paced plotline.
  • The characters are shown to be undercover and themes of identity are common conventions for thrillers
  • The city setting gives a sense of realism
  • Dark, low-key lighting is used in some many scenes to create a sense of suspense and dangerous atmosphere. Film noir style lighting is also used, further creating a sense of suspense and mystery.
  • There is a lot of violence shown which is common in thrillers
  • The trailer features both diegetic sounds (such as the gun noises) and non diegetic music that conform to conventions of thrillers. However there is some non diegetic music featured that is unconventional of thrillers showing that there are other elements to the film as thrillers often combine with other genres.

Horror

Texas Chainsaw (Luessenhop, 2013)

  • The isolated setting for the plot as well as an old unused house as is conventional of horrors
  • Low-key lighting and use of shadows to create sense of unknown, fear and mystery
  • The low angles and close ups only partially reveal the villain so it does not reveal the identity of the antagonist to the audience. A mirror is used to show a small part of the face of the character, this is also a common convention of horror
  • There is conventional non-diegetic music for tension as well as diegetic sounds of screaming, creaking doors and the chainsaw which creates tension and anticipation and makes it clear to the audience the genre and style of the film

LB: Generic Conventions

Thriller

Source Code (Jones, 2011)

  • Close Up on main characters to show emotion and prevalence for main actor. It gives us an idea of who  main character is, the hero of the clip.
  • Dramatic and suspense non-digetic soundtrack to create suspense and set pace of clip.
  • Dark low key lighting to set a dark atmosphere.
  • Fast Paced Editing to set the tempo of the film, knowing that it will be a fast paced film.
  •
    Horror

    Let Me In (Reeves, 2010)

    • Un-conventional soundtrack for horror. Normally slow-paced dramatic music.
    • Typical "help me" scene, dark and scary tunnel, low-key lighting, un-knowing of what may happen.
    • The usage of the colour red and blood connotes the murder/death theme of the film.
    • Lots of close ups and prevalence on child actors, aware they are main characters.

    CC: Generic Conventions

    Horror

    Sinister (Derickson, 2012)

    • Suspence created through non-diegetic sound.
    • Close ups of small child is conventional of a horror themed film
    • Usage of blood connotes murder and death.
    • The lack of shots given to the 'demon' creates suspense for the audience (not knowing what the demon is)
The use of demonic symbols are also convnetional for a supernatural horror film.

    Hide and Seek

    • Open water shows isolation.
    • Brightly coloured scenes followed by dark scenes shows juxtaposition within the plot.
    • Young girl shows iconic horror film plot.

    Group: Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we must include:
    ·         Continuity Editing: Variation in distances  and angles, pans, steadicam, handicam, cutaways (motivated cut to CU)
    ·         180° Rule: ensures correct perspective
    ·         Two lines of dialogue
    ·         Opening of a door
    Ideas:
After deciding that it would be most useful to practice the conventions of horror we began developing story ideas.
Our ideas were mostly based on zombies and the idea of being followed or watched.

    Six feet under (Ball, 2001)

    • The pan from the sky down to the shot of the single tree in the field connotes the idea of isolation and loneliness.
    • The dark colours used throughout connote the idea of death and sadness.
    • The darkness is juxtaposed in the next shot of the dead person being wheeled through the hospital because at the end of the hall way it shows a bright light, connoting the idea that after death is happiness.
    • The dying flower reinforces the idea of sadness and death as the leaves turn from a light colour to a dark colour.
    • The shot of the clock's hand's spinning fast connotes the idea that the plot is fast paced.
    • The sketch in the background of the fighter jet connotes the idea of war.
    • The picture of the love heart connotes the idea of love and break ups.
    • Fast-paced, non-diegetic sound suggests that the plot will also be fast-paced.

    JP:Title Sequence Analysis

    The Shining (Kubrick, 1980)

    •   Extreme Long Shots and Aerial Shots show the natural beauty of the scenery but also connote a sense of isolation
    •  The non-diegetic, ominous musical score contrasts with the setting and creates a tense atmosphere to start the film.
    • The rolling credits are not conventional of opening titles as they are more commonly used in closing credits
    •  The slow pace and fade transitions suggest a slower and more psychological aspect of the horror genre.

Catch Me If You Can (Spielberg, 2002)

    •  The opening titles of catch me if you can is an animation of silhouetted figures which also highlights and summarises particular features of the plot within the film.
    • The combination of the non-diegetic Jazz music and the clothing of the figures give the sequence a 60’s vibe and a sense of setting and era of the film.
    • The music is fast paced and has a sense of excitement and suspense
    • There is a clear chase scene between two characters which provides a narrative for the sequence and film.
    • There is a change in colour scheme between every scene shown within the sequence

    LB: Title Sequence Analysis.

    Art of the Title.

    Signs (Lebeda, 2002)

    • This opening credit is very simple, with just the use of a soundtrack and text; although it is simple it also works well, and makes it dramatic.
    • The text also matches the tempo of the music. One problem about this however is the use of colours and that the text is reasonably hard to read, which is a big problem.
    • However I do like the simplicity of the credits, and how it still manages to be dramatic when basic.

    Buried (Cortes, 2010)

    • This opening sequence is fairly straightforward however more complicated then Signs. Once again what is happening on the screen matches the soundtrack.
    • The font chosen for the credits is suitable for the genre of the film and you can instantly gather the idea about the film from just the start. The colours used are clear and easy to read, the SFX used also works well with the text.
